Gillingham striker Simeon Jackson turned down a contract with the club last season, reveals Paul Scally

Chairman Paul Scally has revealed contract talks with Gillingham striker Simeon Jackson broke down last season.

Jackson has been top scorer for the Gills in the last two seasons but their relegation to League 2 has prompted several clubs to declare their interest.

Millwall and Norwich have both been heavily linked with the Canadian international, who has just one year left on his current contract and can leave for nothing next summer.

It means Mr Scally must decide whether to take the money or keep hold of a striker who has ambitions to be playing at a higher level.

Mr Scally said: "I haven’t had any credible bids for Simeon Jackson so far.

"I have been in discussion with his agent and I’ve told him we’ll be looking forward to seeing him on July 1. That’s as far as it’s gone.

"We did offer him a new deal last season but he turned it down. I don’t think he would sign a new deal at this moment in time.

"He has a year left on his contract and he’ll either see it out or he won’t.

"He was part of the team that got us down and he’ll be part of the team who gets us up unless someone comes in with an offer that is acceptable to the club."

Mr Scally is currently holding negotiations with Cardiff defender Darren Dennehy but admits the deal is not straightforward.

He said: "It’s something we’ve been working on. We have asked him to come and he is keen, we have to try and resolve a few issues first."
