Gillingham's Andy Hessenthaler in the hunt for a striker despite impressive scoring form in League 2

Gillingham enjoyed their biggest away win in more than a decade on Saturday but it hasn’t stopped manager Andy Hessenthaler from seeking even more firepower.

Not since the 5-0 hammering of Burnley in February 1999 have the Gills enjoyed such a feat away from Priestfield as they thrashed Stockport 5-1 to maintain their upward surge in League 2.

Cody McDonald hit a hat-trick but Hessenthaler (pictured) knows his squad remains light in attack and is searching for another face to complement his forward line.

"If you look at our squad at the moment then the forward area is perhaps somewhere where we can look at," said the Gills boss.

"We have young Stefan Payne but is he ready for regular football yet? Maybe not. He is a young boy, only 18.

"Dennis Oli is out at the moment and when we have a problem with Bayo (Akinfenwa), like we did on Saturday, or Cody (McDonald) then we haven’t really got a lot of cover in that area.

"So if we are looking anywhere that would be an area where we could perhaps get another body in to complete the squad."

The transfer window for permanent signings remains open throughout January, but as ever, the amount of money available will dictate just what level of player Hessenthaler can bring to Priestfield.
