Gillingham's Charlie Lee not afraid to talk about winning promotion this season

Midfielder Charlie Lee has urged his Gillingham team-mates to embrace a promotion campaign rather than let it play on their minds.

Lee (pictured) knows exactly what it takes to move up the Football League after three promotions in four seasons with Peterborough.

The Gills could move back into the automatic promotion places this weekend and Lee, who hopes to return from injury to make the squad against Oxford on Saturday, is setting his sights high once again.

He said: "Some people don’t like to talk about promotion, they don’t like to think about it, but it doesn’t affect me.

"I’ve been lucky that I’ve had three promotions in four seasons. I wouldn’t have come to Gillingham if I didn’t think we had a chance of promotion.

"I know you are not meant to say it but I don’t care – I’m here to get promoted and that’s the only thing I am looking for. If we’re not in League 1 next year I’ll be disappointed."

Lee was just starting to find his best form following a slow start to the campaign when he was sidelined by a knee injury.

He faces a battle to win his place back and, with a number of senior players expected to return to full fitness this weekend, there will be competition for places.

"It looks like there will be a few players back fit again on Saturday so it should be a good bench," said Lee.
