Have your say on traffic plan

This is what the traffic flow round the Westgate Towers could look like if a controversial plan gets the go-ahead.

Residents have been given until June 17 to comment on the scheme, aimed at protecting the historic towers.

Ruth Goudie, Kent Highway Services chief for east Kent, said: “It will reduce but not eliminate traffic through the Westgate.

“Some motorists will inevitably choose to use London Road and Rheims Way if they are heading towards Wincheap.”

The plan involves creating a 25m section city-bound from Station Road West to beyond Kirby’s Lane for just buses, taxis and bikes.

Other traffic heading towards the city will be diverted via Station Road West and into North Lane.

The plan goes before the city council later this summer.

But already it has met with opposition.

Michael Weller, 81, of Whitehall Bridge Raod, said: “Traffic congestion at Station Road West and the Westgate roundabout will increase and journeys will be longer.

“I shall do everything in my power to get this scheme thrown out.”

Rowena Laming, 69, of Whitehall Gardens, said: “I can see the scheme increasing traffic and causing heavy congestion.”
