Heartfelt sympathy has been sent to the family of a toddler who died at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to The Crescent, Sheerness, at about 8.30am on Saturday to help Jamie Junior Askew.

The three-year-old (pictured left with his father Jamie) was rushed to Medway Maritime Hospital, but could not be saved.

The Kent Air Ambulance was also called following reports of a medical emergency and it landed at Beachfields Park.

Jamie Junior, who was due to turn four on December 23, had previously appeared in the news after being injured by a falling tile at Sittingbourne railway station last year.

Anna Butler, who owns RJs clothing shop near the clocktower, opposite the flat where the boy lived with his parents Jamie Askew and Leanne MacDonald, had turned up to dress her shop window for Christmas when she saw the emergency services arrive.

"It was awful," she said. "It's so distressing and upsetting, especially at this time of year.

"It's such a sad time for the family and all our thoughts are with them."

Manager of Premier Stores, Julie Yates, said she came into work just after it had happened and was devastated to hear the news.

She said she knew the family as Jamie Junior used to go in to get his sweets from the shop.

"It's so sad to hear the news and our thoughts are with them," she said.

"It's heartbreaking and the whole community is shocked."

Kent Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

An inquest will be opened once a post mortem has been carried out.
