History to come alive at Dockyard

AN EXCITING programme of events has been announced for Kent’s dockyard.

The first main event of the year at Chatham Historic Dockyard will be at Easter when the attraction will be filled with hundreds of transport displays.

The Medway Festival of Steam and Transport takes place on Easter Sunday and Monday, March 24.

On Saturday, July 5, The Historic Dockyard once again hosts Veterans’ Day.

This year the event will be based around the 100th anniversaries of both the building of submarines at Chatham and of the Territorial Army.

In September the attraction once again is transformed into a Dockyard of the 1940s during its Salute to the 40s event. Families can enjoy a weekend of nostalgia, wartime experiences and entertainment.

Families will also enjoy two themed weekends at the Dockyard; Pirates at Chatham on Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26, and Smugglers on Sunday, August 24 and Monday, August 25 when younger visitors can take part in lots of activities and entertainment.

The Boys’ Brigade is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a celebration day at the Dockyard on Saturday, May 31. There will be marching bands and brass bands, with many other displays and activities.

Throughout the year there are visits to the Historic Dockyard by car clubs with their own vehicles providing added interest. The Alfa Romeo Club’s Alfa Day is on Sunday, April 13, the European Stag Clubs Rally on Sunday, May 11 and the Porsche Club GB on Sunday, July 20.

The Scammell Register South of England Road Run and Rally on Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12, will be of interest to fans of heavy haulage.

In addition, once a month from April to November throughout the year, there are Dockyard in Steam and Diesels in the Dockyard weekends.
