Immigration raid on Chinese restaurant

A SUSPECTED illegal immigrant broke his leg while trying to flee immigration officers during a raid on a Chinese restaurant.

Officers from the Border and Immigration Agency attended the Chopsticks restaurant at the former Black Horse pub at Hersden, near Canterbury, on Sunday following a tip off that people were working there illegally.

While questioning staff, they saw someone attempting to escape via a rear entrance.

But before they gave chase, the Malaysian man fell off a wall and broke his lower leg.

He was taken to hospital and later arrested, as were three other Malaysian men and a Chinese woman.

All five were found to have been working illegally and the Agency says they will now be deported.

Regional director of the Border and Immigration Agency, Tony Smith, said: “We will not tolerate illegal working which is why we are investing more money in enforcement and forging even closer links with the police.

“Illegal working is unfair on honest employers who recruit staff with the right to work and pay them a proper wage. That is why the rules are getting tougher.”
