Investigation starts into Channel rail link death

AN INVESTIGATION is underway after a man was killed working on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link near Folkestone.

British Transport Police and CTRL are inquiring into what happened at the site close to Westenhanger station.

Reports were received by CTRL at 7.40pm on Friday about an incident in the Westenhanger area and it was later confirmed that the man, a worker with one of the contractors, had been killed.

It is the first fatality during the construction of the high-speed link.

Paul Ravenscroft, from CTRL, said: "We are in the midst of our own inquiry and a transport police inquiry in to just how this came about.

"We need to get to the bottom of why it happened."

But he said no details of the dead man or the circumstances of his death would be released until inquiries were completed and it clear exactly how he died.
