The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby daughter today.
The news was announced shortly after 11am and among the first to send congratulations was Ukip leader Nigel Farage who was in Ramsgate to address a meeting with South Thanet voters, the 22nd of the campaign,
He said: "It is great news. I have sent out an order to every Ukip candidate in the country to raise a glass to raise a glass to the new royal baby girl."
Asked whether as a father of two daughters, he had any tips to offer, he said: "with all children, whether they are boys or girls, is to show a lot patience and understanding."
Mr Farage quipped that he was pleased to see the weight of the baby girl - 8lb 3oz - was
announced using Imperial measures. 'Maybe that is an indication of what they think,' he joked.
The Duchess was admitted to St Mary's Hospital in London at around 6am today and her daughter, a little sister for 21-month-old Prince George was delivered at 8.34am.
A spokesman for Kensington Palace said the Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth and added: "Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."
The name of the new baby is expected to be announced in the next few days. Favourites with the bookmakers include Charlotte and Alice with royal favourites Elizabeth and Alexandra also in the running.
One of the Duchess' final public engagements before having her daughter was in Kent where she visited the Turner Contemporary in Margate
