Paul Farbrace admits Kent’s recent reversal of fortunes in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition has left them thinking about what might have been.

Kent have won their last four Group A games and last week handed leaders Sussex Sharks a 14-run defeat at Hove in front of the Sky cameras.

Too many defeats early on mean they are unable to make the semi-finals, but director of cricket Farbrace says they are keen to finish their programme on a high, against Derbyshire at Canterbury on Monday - especially after losing to the east Midlanders at Derby last month.

Farbrace said: “We’ve beaten good teams in this competition, including Sussex away last week, but we will look back at the away games against The Netherlands, and Derbyshire as the two games which probably cost us the chance of being up there to qualify.

“We should have won both matches. On both occasions we got into winning positions and we beat ourselves, we weren’t beaten by a better side.”

Farbrace said he felt Kent's lack of bowling depth in the first two months of the summer was also a factor in their poor early form in the competition, but he now feels they have a squad capable of beating anyone.

He added: “I go back to what I’ve been saying all season. If we have a decent bowling attack then we’ve got a decent team but for the first two months of the season, apart from the first (championship) game at Chelmsford, we went with a pretty average bowling attack.

"Since we’ve had a good bowling attack we’ve been competitive in just about every game.”

Vice-captain Geraint Jones will continue to skipper to side in Rob Key’s absence and all-rounder Azhar Mahmood could return after missing the India game on Friday. The action gets under way at 1.45pm.
