The Kent-based editor of Private Eye has denied new laws are needed to govern the press at the Leveson inquiry.

Ian Hislop, who lives in Sissinghurst, near Cranbrook, has been giving evidence at the probe into media ethics.

He said there is no need for more regulation to clamp down on practices such as phone hacking - just the enforcement of existing laws.

Mr Hislop argued the inquiry should speak to people who bought the News of the World and ask what they thought they were getting.

Despite being critical of newspapers, Mr Hislop did make a plea in favour of journalism and a free press.

Also giving evidence today is Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Times editor James Harding and Sunday Times editor John Witherow.
