Kit up. Ride Safe. Live longer.

That's the message from a new safety campaign called 'Ghostlids', launched by Kent Highways to help reduce the number of young lives lost on the county's roads.

Over the past five years, 127 16-19 year-olds have been killed or seriously injured in Kent while riding on mopeds or motorcycles.

The campaign will use real-life information from those who have been involved in motorcycle crashes.

Posters are being put around key crash sites in Kent and bus banners will feature a haunting image of a white motorcycle helmet, representing the young lives that have been lost to crashes.

Tom Morton, is Kent Highways Service's Motorcylist Safety Officer, and has been riding for 40 years.

He said: "It's vital motorcylists protect themselves.

"Did you know that the 'grind rate' per half-an-inch of skin and bone, against a rough road surface in a 30 mph crash, is about one second.

"Denim may protect you for up to two seconds before wearing through, and leather last around seven seconds."

The campaign is still actively looking for case studies of young people who have been involved or affected by a motorcycle crash in Kent.
