Killer road victim is named

KENT Police have named a motorcyclist who died on one of the notorious roads in the county.

Douglas Young, who lived in Bramley Road, Snodland, near Rochester, was killed when his bike crashed on a closed section of the Ratcliffe Highway part of the deadly A228, near Strood.

The tragedy happened as Mr Young, 66, was returning from a visit to a friend on the Hoo Peninsula on Bank Holiday Monday.

Mr Young was a keen biker. It is still unclear what he was doing on the closed section of road which had already been replaced by the new dual carriageway scheme, currently being undertaken in the area.

His body was found by a member of the public who had been passing in a car. It is not thought any other vehicles were involved.

A spokesman for Medway coroner’s office said: “A post mortem examination found Mr Young died from multiple injuries. An inquest into his death has been open and adjourned.”

A Medway Council spokesman added: “We are currently investigating how the crash happened. Until we know more we are not in a position to say what caused it or speculate on possible causes.”

“If any practical recommendations for improving the safety of the road are needed following the investigation Medway Council will look to implement these as soon as possible”.
