A Kent gymnast finished in a qualifying spot for London 2012 but can’t take part because he’s too young.

However, Pegasus star Courtney Tulloch – and team-mate James Hall – have already been told they will be in the provisional Great Britain squad for Rio 2016.

Tulloch (pictured), who does not reach the Olympic gymnast qualifying age of 18 until October next year, said: "It’s a bit annoying to miss out on London – it would have been the best thing in the world if I’d been able to go.

"At the same time, my chances in 2016 will be a lot better so it might be for the best.

"I’ve now got time to learn new skills to help me compete against the best in the world and challenge for a medal."

European champion Tulloch, a student at the New Line Learning Academy in Maidstone, won silver on rings at the Masters Finals in Liverpool.

That would have earned a spot in the five-man Great Britain team for London 2012 but for his age. Instead, he’ll compete at the Australian Youth Olympics in January and the World School Games in Rio later next year.

Tim Peake, of governing body British Gymnastics, said: "Courtney is a brilliant gymnast – a real powerhouse on the rings – but unfortunately he’s too young for 2012.

"When he won gold at the European Championships, it was our first medal for more than 20 years. His results show he’s already up there with the senior men so he’s very much on track for 2016."
