Lorry gets stuck in town centre

A LORRY carrying an abnormal load got stuck in the centre of Chatham on Monday.

Police closed the Sir John Hawkins fly-over for a short time.

The lorry, which was travelling down Railway Street at about 3.15pm, became wedged under the New Road/Railway Street viaduct and was then unable to take the bend at thebottom of the road.

Officers closed the flyver and a section of the ring road from Railway Street and Rome Terrace and the flyover, so the they could assist and direct the driver to reverse his vehicle out of the situation.

A spokesman for Medway Police said: “It was an abnormal load and where the road bends from Railway Street to the flyover was a particularly difficult manoeuvre as the lorry was so big.

The road was re-opened at 4.05pm.
