A man and a woman arrested over the alleged exploitation of Lithuanian men working in the food industry have been released on bail.

The pair, from Maidstone, were held after a raid on a property in the town on Friday morning on suspicion of human trafficking for labour exploitation offences.

The 52-year-old man and a woman aged 50 have now been bailed pending police inquiries.

At least 29 workers were said to have been forced to live in squalid conditions and threatened with violence if they did not follow their supervisor's instructions.

The arrests come after an investigation by Kent Police, working with the Gangmaster Licensing Authority and UK Human Trafficking Centre .

DI Keith Roberts, from Kent Police, said: "It follows on from reports received that migrant workers have been made to live in poor conditions and forced to work in an environment that gave little or no regard to their safety or general wellbeing.

"By working with our partner agencies we have been able to make these arrests and workers will now be offered help and support.

"Anyone found to be committing exploitation offences will be investigated fully and brought before the courts."
