A man has been arrested after a dog was found beaten to death.

The animal's body was found under the arches at Folkestone's Sunny Sands beach and a 23-year-old man was arrested in the town on suspicion of animal cruelty on Tuesday.

He is on police bail pending further enquiries.

The animal had been found by another dog walker under arches at Sunny Sands on December 15.

It had been bludgeoned around the head, suffering severe injuries, and had broken teeth.

The tan-coloured bitch was believed to be a cross-bred Staffordshire bull terrier or English bull terrier.

Both South Kent Police and the RSPCA are investigating the case and anyone who can help should contact PC Eileen Dodd on 01303 850055.
