A man has been taken to hospital after accidentally setting himself on fire in Ramsgate.

The man, in his 30s, had started a bonfire at an allotment on Stirling Way last night when his clothes caught alight.

He is being treated for burns that are not thought to be life-threatening.

Crews were called to the scene at about 6.10pm.

Ramsgate fire crew manager Neil Roby said: "It is believed he'd used an accelerant to increase the bonfire burning and his clothes caught light.

"A member of the public remembered our 'stop, drop and roll' advice and managed to get him to the floor so when we arrived, we assisted ambulance paramedics in treating the burns and extinguished the bonfire."

"We're coming to that time of year when people use bonfires to clear their gardens, but we urge them to treat these types of fires with extreme care and follow our safety steps to avoid serious injury or causing an out-of-control fire."
