A post mortem has been carried out on a woman whose body was
found at a guest house in Canterbury after a man was shot
and injured by police at Morrisons in the Wincheap area of the
city.

Police say the woman's death is being treated as suspicious
and the shot man has been arrested.

The 32-year-old, who lives in Canterbury, remained in
hospital on Saturday and detectives are waiting to question
him.

The woman's body was found at the Ambassador Guest House in
Victoria Road in the early hours of Friday morning.

A forensic examination of the scene was carried out. The
woman has not yet been identified - but a post mortem was carried
out on Saturday. Police have not yet revealed the cause of
death.

Police say house-to-house enquiries will be carried out in the
Victoria Road area over the next few days.

Armed officers went to the supermarket in Ten Perch Road at
around 8.40pm Thursday after several reports about a man with
a gun.

A police spokesman said: "During the investigation of these
reports, officers shot and injured a male." The man was shot in the
arm and taken to hospital.

The spokesman added: "No one else was injured and a weapon has
been recovered from the scene."

One female Morrisons cashier said: "It was really awful,
especially for the people in the store at the time. You would not
expect this to happen in a Morrisons store. No-one wants this to
happen."

Another male cashier working at the time of the incident said:
"It all happened pretty quickly in about 10 seconds or so. My
supervisor was next to me and we were really unsure of what was
going on.

"Suddenly a police team appeared and there was a shout of 'get
down, get down'. Then there was a shot."

A man who lives a couple of doors along from the flat where
the woman's body was discovered said: "I cannot believe this has
happened. It's not exactly what you want happening on your
doorstep."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission launched an investigation into the incident - but it has now been handed back to Kent Police's Professional Standards Department.

An IPCC spokesman said: "Taking into consideration all the
information available at the moment, the IPCC has decided this case
should be investigated locally.

"If any further information comes to light during their
investigation which causes concern, the case should be referred
back to the IPCC."
