A derelict building continues to be supervised by firefighters after bursting into flames last night.

As of 11am two fire engines were still at the scene in Coombe Valley Road, Dover, making sure any hot spots did not cause the conflagration to burst into life again.

Fire crews were first called to the blaze at the former Barwicks headquarters at 11.30pm.

At its height there were 10 crews fighting the fire.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "The cause is still under investigation.

"It was a big building, about 25m by 10m, and one of the hazards of the blaze was the old asbestos sheeting on the site.

"We fought the fire in a defensive way, from the outside, and it was soon under control.

"Crowds of people watched the blaze and it was quite a spectacular sight."
