Passenger dies in head-on crash horror

POLICE today appealed for witnesses to a head-on car crash which claimed the life of an elderly man.

The crash happened in Hoath Way, Gillingham at about 6pm last night. The victim, who was in his 80s, was a passenger in one of the cars. Paramedics battled to revive him at the scene but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Medway Maritime Hospital.

A police spokesman said: "The collision was between a blue Vauxhall Cavalier, which the victim had been travelling in, and a BMW, which had been travelling north from Ambley Road."

Both drivers were also hurt, the Cavalier driver suffering broken ribs and a broken wrist and the BMW driver suffering minor injuries. They were also taken to hospital for treatment.

The 23-year-old driver of the BMW, who is from Gillingham, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
