A pedestrian is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Sturry, Canterbury.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision on the A291 at Calcott Hill, which happened shortly before 4.30pm yesterday.

The 59-year-old man, who suffered head and leg injuries, was stabilised by ambulance crews at the scene before being taken to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital at Margate, where his condition this afternoon was described as 'critical but stable'.

The collision also involved a grey Citroen C4, whose driver was not hurt.

PC Duncan Swallow of the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or was driving along the A291 between Canterbury and Herne Bay at that time yesterday afternoon to contact us as they could have vital information."

Witnesses should call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit appeal line on 01622 798538.

The road was closed until 8.30pm while the crash was investigated and the vehicle was recovered.
