STOLEN: Cash cards were stolen in several towns

POLICE are investigating a spate of cash point card thefts in several north Kent towns.

Last month there were seven incidents of people being distracted while using ATM machines in Medway and having their cards stolen from them.

The cards were then used to withdraw cash from the victim’s accounts just a few minutes after they were snatched.

The thefts took place at the High Street branches of Halifax, Lloyds and Natwest in Strood, Rainham, Gillingham and Chatham between November 22 and 27, and police believe they are all related.

Detective constable Sanj Tanday said: "There are a number of steps that you can take to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of this crime.

"Be vigilant. If you are suspicious of any activity near a cash dispenser or involving your account, contact the police."

People are warned to make sure no one is watching when using a cash point, and to never to use machines that appear to have been tampered with or let anyone know their pin number.

Anyone with information about the spate of card thefts is asked to contact Medway police station on 01634 792525 or Kent CrimeStoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
