A GROUND breaking operation between Kent and Essex Police could lead to more bobbies on the beat and better border policing at the Dartford river crossing.

Operation Forefront was announced at a press conference today following a successful bid for half a million pounds from the government.

It is hoped the two-year programme will stave off the threat of a merger and lead to savings which can be ploughed back into things like neighbourhood policing.

There is no proposal to merge the forces. Both both will maintain operational independence.

Kent's Chief Constable Mike Fuller, stressed that he had always felt that some resources should be shared. "This will lead to better policing for commumities in Kent," he added.

Kent Police say its force would be able to use the Essex Police helicopter.
