Recycling plant fire burns for 12 hours

Firefighters spent more than 12 hours dealing with a fire at a waste recycling plant.

Between 400 and 500 tonnes of waste caught fire at Country Style Recycling in Barge Way, Kemsley, at around 6pm on Monday.

Four crews from Sheppey and Sittingbourne dealt with the blaze which was still ongoing in the early hours of Tuesday.

They used a mechanical digger to break down the pile of rubbish while they put the fire out.

At 12.20am one crew was stood down and by 7.30am the other three had left the scene.

The fire was allowed to burn out with under the control of the site manager.

It is not known how the waste, which was being processed into compost, caught fire.

It is not being treated as suspicious.
