Comedy sketches written by Kent school children aired on kmfm nominated for awards alongside Alan Partridge and Frank Skinner

A 10-piece comedy show written by schoolchildren is up against Alan Partridge and Frank Skinner for a chance to win at the UK’s leading radio awards.

Just after lockdown ended, kmfm teamed up with the Kent production company Unusual to create and air the comedy show written by Year 5 and Year 6 pupils across the county.

Cool Skool Sketch Show was broadcast on the radio station in April last year and was the world's first radio comedy show written and performed by children.

More than 350 pupils took part in the project and they attended workshops in comedy writing and recording led by writers of TV's multi award-winning Horrible Histories and Dead Ringers.

Before the radio show aired last year, Rob Wills, head of broadcast at kmfm said: "When Jon from Unusual production company contacted me about this I couldn't say no.

"So many children have benefited from him and his team visiting their school and I know how excited they are to hear their stories on the radio – we look forward to airing them."

In the last week, the project has been nominated for two prestigious awards: The New York Radio Festival and the ARIAS.

Other radio programmes and podcasts shortlisted in The Comedy Award section for the ARIAS include Frank Skinner (Avalon for Absolute Radio) and From The Oasthouse: The Alan Partridge Podcast, Series 2 (Baby Cow for Audible).

The results will be announced at a ceremony hosted by Rylan and Fleur East at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in Covent Garden on May 2.
