Scrubland fire leaves Canterbury homes without power

A Scrubland blaze came close to damaging overhead power cables in Canterbury.

Crews were alerted to the fire around 9.30pm on Wednesday night at the back of Canterbury Golf Club, Littlebourne Road.

At its height, six appliances and 30 firefighters helped tackle the flames, which leapt 10 meters into the sky, licking high voltage power cables. A lack of water supply made dealing with the blaze difficult, which covered two hectares.

Watch manager Mark Jones said: "We have had to deal with a lot of these scrubs fires recently, which are a major result of the dry weather.

"It was a hard and rapid fight to put out the flames and prevent them from spreading any further.

"We are really urging members of the public to be careful when they are out in the countryside and not drop or discard any kind of smoking material or matches.

"People should also remember fire safety and not participate in any inappropriate activity in an open area that could spark an incident such as this."

Fire crews were stood down at 11.15pm.

EDF Energy spokesman James Barber said: "We were alerted to a fire incident in the Canterbury area on Wednesday evening.

"Although we have overhead electricity lines in the area, they were not damaged and no customer supplies were lost."
