Kent driver Mike Conway survived an horrific crash at the legendary Indy 500 race in the USA on Sunday.

The 26-year-old from Sevenoaks clipped the tyre of Ryan Hunter-Reay’s car and was sent flying into the crash barriers at over 200mph.

Hunter-Reay had run out of fuel on the final lap at the famous Brickyard circuit and when he slowed, Conway ran straight into trouble.

Conway suffered numerous injuries, including a broken leg, and had surgery on Sunday night. He is also understood to have back injuries and will require a brace for the next few months. Hunter-Reay walked away with a thumb injury.

A couple of watching spectators were also treated for minor injuries as Conway’s car shattered across the track.

Conway is in the second season competing in the Indy Racing League for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

Team owner Dennis Reinbold said: "I was just getting ready to tell Mike, ‘Some guys are going to slow down, so give yourself some room’. I never got the words out."
