A shop manager was kidnapped by two men who forced him to return to the store and empty the safe.

The robbers struck after the manager had locked up at the Somerfield supermarket in Parkwood Green, Rainham on Tuesday night.

He got into his silver Vauxhall Corsa car and was driving along Deanwood Drive when it is believed a vehicle behind him flashed its lights.

He pulled over and then the pair then bundled him into their car, drove him back to the shop and made him open the safe. They then escaped with a large amount of cash, thought to be between £10,000 and £15,000.

It is not known what weapons were involved - but it is believed the victim has told police he thought a gun was involved.

The shop, which is in a precinct, was open as usual the following day.

Police are appealing to any witnesses to the incident, which happened between 9.30-9.45pm, to come forward.

Det Insp Ann Lisseman said: "One of the men involved in this robbery is described as white, 6ft tall, of slim to medium build and was wearing a red hoodie. Unfortunately there is no description of other offender."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 01634 792474 or Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
