Spruce-up for seaside resort

AN IMPROVEMENT project aimed at revitalising Birchington is due to begin this month. As well as resurfacing in the main Station Road shopping centre, trees will be planted and the street lights will be completely renewed.

The ten-week scheme to introduce a 20mph speed limit zone in Station Road and the adjoining road network is being paid for by the parish council and Kent County Council.

Work is due to begin on Monday, February 18, and will involve disruption to the main road through the heart of Kent’s largest village.

Cllr Dennis Cooper, parish council vice chairman and chairman of its projects committee, said: “There should not be too much disruption. Station Road is in a poor state and badly needs resurfacing. It was decided that it would be best for this work to be done now, as part of the overall project, rather than face more disruption.

“Resurfacing has been scheduled for Sundays to try and make as little impact as possible to village life. We believe the whole project will help revitalise the village. Hopefully it will attract more businesses, shoppers and visitors. It has been designed to provide a more pleasant and safer environment."
