Super hospitals favoured by clinicians

BROMLEY could receive a regional super hospital, if proposals to reshape NHS services get the go-ahead.

The spotlight has fallen on the Princess Royal University (PRU) Hospital, Farnborough, and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup, as two of the four hospitals in south east London that could be up- or downgraded in a move to create two specialist hospitals for the region, serving about one million people.

The recommendation to halve the number of acute trauma centres in return for greater specialist skills at two of the four current main hospitals comes from leading medics rather than financial advisors.

NHS London argues it would improve patients’ chances of survival as well as help solve the financial black hole the system of four general district hospitals has created in the area.

The other two hospitals affected by the recommendations are Lewisham Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich.
