Suspects arrested in hunt for armed Post Office robbers

Four people have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a post office in St Mary's Bay yesterday.

An 18 year-old man, a 20 year-old man and a 23 year-old man, all from Romney Marsh, and a 20 year-old woman from Hythe have been arrested.

The four individuals are in custody and police say they have recovered "a quantity of cash".

An elderly man was treated by paramedics at the scene after he was pushed to the floor during the robbery in Teelin Close at 1.45pm.

The robber allegedly demanded money then fled as a pillion passenger on a motorcross motorcycle which was parked outside the next-door picture shop, according to police.

He was described as white and 5ft 10ins tall with a slim build, wearing an orange motorcycle helmet and dark trousers.

The two men on the bike then sped from the scene up Jefferson Lane, towards the Marsh, said residents.

Armed police, dogs and helicopters were drawn into the chase.
Residents in Teelin Close were prevented from returning to their homes for several hours while police investigated.

A large crowd gathered at the scene.
