Doctors fear a teenager might never walk again after a freak accident on his motorbike.

Christopher Wakefield was on his way back from work and had almost arrived at his home on The Vineries estate, Gillingham, when he came to a speed bump.

The 19-year-old's bike wobbled and hit the kerb - flinging him off the machine, into a wall and his head against a lamppost.

Christopher, who is a welder, was seriously injured. Christopher was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital and later transferred to the Royal London Orthopaedic Hospital, in Whitechapel, London.

Doctors discovered one of the vertebrae in his spine had been shattered and the injury had pinched his spinal cord. They are unsure if he will ever walk again.

The teenager has now been moved to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire, in the hope physiotherapy can rehabilitate him.

Christopher's friends have been so moved by his plight since the accident on Saturday, October 27, they have decided to raise money for him by doing a sponsored walk.

They plan to walk from the spot where the accident happened, in Gillingham, to Bromley railway station and then board a train to Stoke Mandeville to visit him. They will set off this Saturday morning.

Emma Galloway, 22, is helping to organise the event.

She said: "I've known Christopher all his life as we all grew up together on the Vineries estate. He is one of the good guys, one of the lads, and works hard. He really doesn't deserve what's happened to him.

"We hope by doing the sponsored walk we can raise enough money for all the crucial things he will need to make his life easier when he eventually returns home, including the most important part which will be his wheelchair."

Emma, a mother of one, added: "I printed off 20 sponsorship forms and his friends and people from the estate snapped them up within an hour, so at least 20 of us will be doing it, but there is bound to be more.

"His friends just want to do something for him so he will be able to get the best of what he needs."
