Two teenagers were rescued from the sea at Reculver after getting into difficulties on Monday afternoon.

A girl, aged 13, and a 14-year-old boy were paddling in canoes without lifejackets and were swept out to sea by a strong tide at about 3.15pm.

The girl’s canoe capsized and she was seen clinging to it before the pair could be heard shouting for help.

A man on the shore telephoned the coastguard and the Whitstable lifeboat was launched.

In the meantime, the teenagers had been helped ashore by members of the public near Reculver Towers.

Lifeboatmen gave oxygen to the the girl.
