The Way We Were - Look back at Sun Pier

The future of Medway's last public pier has been put in doubt after storm damage earlier this year.

Sun Pier in Chatham was closed in May after mooring pontoons were damaged in a storm.

Officials at Medway Council say it will cost an estimated £80,000 to repair. With budgets tight its future remains uncertain. The pier is the last-remaining public pier on the river.

Blue Boar Pier was removed years ago, Strood Pier is permanently closed. Rochester Pier is also out of bounds.

The long-term future of Sun Pier may soon be secured, but only with government cash.

The large tower of flats proposed on the site of the pier is set to be formally scrapped by Medway Council this week.

It could free up Whitehall cash as part of the regeneration of the waterfront.

Instead of the flats, it is hoped councillors will be approve the pier's restoration and expansion.
