Thousands set to flock to Brands Hatch today to support Paralympic cyclists

Queues build up today at the road cycling event

The Brands Hatch Paralympics road cycling event is under way - and thousands are expected to line the route today.

More than 7,000 fans are due to spur the athletes on along the West Kingsdown route - with the biggest crowds expected when GB athletes compete.

Double gold medallist David Stone is due to defend his men's time trial title today before his road race crown on Saturday.

Defending women's time trial champion Rachel Morris is also due to race today and will next be in action in the women's time trial on Saturday.

Swimmer turned cyclist Sarah Storey, a gold medallist in the women's time trial category in 2008, is also kicking off her quest for gold in the women's time trial.

Visually impaired competitor Lorna Turnham and her pilot Fiona Duncan are also hotly tipped for medals in the individual time trial and road race.

Brands Hatch is expected to attract the biggest global audience since the last Formula One race there 26 years ago.

Three miles of roads around the circuit have been closed for the Paralympic road cycling since Monday and will remain so until midnight on Saturday.

The A20 at Gorse Hill, from south of Eglantine Road to south of Brands Hatch entrance will be closed except for access.

Scratchers Lane, Fawkham, from its junction with A20 London Road throughout its entire length to its junction with Fawkham Road will be closed with restricted access.

Part of Fawkham Road, West Kingsdown, between Scratchers Lane and a rear entrance to Brands Hatch will be closed with restricted access.
