Threat of flooding continues

FEARS of further flooding in the county and other parts of the South East remained today, the Environment Agency said.

Flood warnings are still in place for the the Eastern Rother and the Medway in Kent. Yalding, near Maidstone, is one of the areas most under threat.

Peter Midgley, spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: "Most of the flood warnings are on the lower reaches of the rivers because over the last week the water has been making its way to the sea.

"Places like Yalding, Hellingly and Robertsbridge are the areas where we are most concerned. The threat of flooding is receding in the head water areas but down river we still worried about conditions."

He added: "If we get more of these very heavy, intense rain storms we could still have some serious problems."
