Tornado over Herne Bay?

Kent's shocking weather still has a few surprises in store, it seems.

For as rain lashed the county yesterday, a weather phenomenon more common in Kansas than Kent appeared.

A tornado, or funnel cloud, appeared over Herne Bay, as this picture sent in by reader Stella Shepherd shows.

Stella was watching the weather from her home in Hadleigh Gardens at around 7.25pm when she spotted the unusual sky.

She said: "I was looking at the cloud formation, because it was amazing.

"Then I saw the twister coming down over the sea. It was pulling the water up!

"I've never seen anything like that. But my daughter-in-law's over from America, and she noticed it first."

What Stella saw was more likely to be a funnel cloud then a tornado - where a cloud of condensed water droplets form a rotating column of wind from the base of a cloud - but it doesn't reach land or water.

Forecasters are now predicting calmer times, with temperatures gradually increasing over the weekend and into next week.
