It will mean better electricity for thousands of customers.

But for Michelin-starred pub owners Phil and Steve Harris it means a drastic drop in trade.

Their Sportsman pub and restaurant at Seasalter has been hit by roadworks which are part of a £4.6million project to install 13km of electricity cables under Faversham Road.

It began in the autumn but temporary traffic lights and road closures mean that five-minute journeys take nearly an hour.

“We are no longer a viable place to come for lunch for a lot of people,” said Phil Harris who, with brother Steve, took over the restaurant in 1999. “I’m out there today serving nine people, usually I’d expect 20 to 25.”

The Sportsman is only accessible via Faversham Road and the effect on business has been dramatic.

“This has cost us a serious amount of money,” said Mr Harris. "This is potentially hugely damaging for us.”

James Barber, spokesman for EDF Energy Networks, said: “We are installing 13km of cables as part of a £4.6m investment project that will strengthen the electricity network for thousands of customers in the Faversham and Whitstable areas.

“The work involves digging trenches for the cables and installing ducts, work which requires roads to be closed and diversions to be put in place for safety reasons.

“We do understand the impact which any improvement to the electricity network can cause and we hope people understand the long-term benefits for the area.”
