A Village hall was left under a foot of water after a downpour on Monday night brought almost half the monthly expectation of rain in a matter of hours.

Events at Warden Village Hall had to be cancelled on Tuesday after the rain on Monday night left it waterlogged and unusable.

Villagers and volunteers were out in force on Tuesday helping to mop up the water and clear the hall.

Events that were due to be held at the hall on Tuesday including Warden Play Group, a Family Action Group meeting, and an after-school club, were called off at the last minute.

Cllr Sandle said: “People really worked hard to clear the hall."

Islander Ken Beal measures daily rainfall on Sheppey to feed back to the Environment Agency and the UK Met Office.

Overnight between Monday and Tuesday he recorded a rainfall of 25.7mm – around one inch.

He said this is almost twice the total rainfall that is expected for February.
