Two late goals from Tommy Whitnell ensured Welling avoided an upset in the FA Cup second qualifying round on Saturday.

Whitnell scored twice in as many minutes to overcome their plucky Ryman League Division 1 North opponents, who should have salvaged at least a replay.

Welling started brightly but it was East Thurrock that hit the post in the seventh minute when keeper Charlie Mitten fumbled Ben Boyce's drive and the ball trickled against the woodwork before going wide.

The hosts had good chances with Whitnell twice going wide and Lee Blackburn shooting over but their play lacked cohesion and there was little surprise that boss Andy Ford made a double change at half-time.

Jack Parkinson gave more bite in midfield and Adrian Stone provided a physical presence up front.

Within minutes, Stone and Whitnell both had headers saved by keeper Richard Wray before Michael Deane shot over.

East Thurrock were not without their moments and Kurt Smith was denied by Andy Sambrook's block while Boyce skipped past two challenges but scuffed his low shot.

Welling took the lead on 75 minutes when Stone's shot was saved and Michael Bakare's follow-up fell for Whitnell to prod home.

Whitnell took his Welling tally to four goals in three games by volleying in again two minutes later after Stone's flick-on.

It could have been more as Jake Hobbs and Stone went clear but were denied by Wray while Bakare clipped the ball wide with the last kick of the game.

Bromley eased to a 2-0 victory over Flackwell Heath in the FA Cup second qualifying round on Saturday courtesy of two goals early in the second half.

Warren McBean intercepted a poor back pass and rounded the keeper to score the opener after 47 minutes.

Three minutes later a fine finish from Mark Corneille ensured Bromley went in the hat for the third round draw.
