Welling missed out on the Blue Square Bet South play-offs by a single point after rounding off their season in style on Saturday.

Knowing that nothing less than a win would maintain their outside hopes, the Wings put the pressure on the teams above them by racing into a three-goal lead inside the first half-hour.

Had it not been for the heroics of visiting keeper Simon Locke, Welling could have hit double figures such was their dominance.

Eventually, the Wings were left hoping for long periods of the second half for another goal to arrive for either Hampton or Ebbsfleet but the long periods of silence on the terraces told the players all they needed to know.

Welling went ahead on 14 minutes when Andy Pugh's cross eventually fell for Luis Cumbers to score from close range.

Cumbers was denied a second by Ross Adams' block before the impressive Jamie Day had a near-post drive turned behind by Locke at the near post.

The second goal arrived in the 22nd minute when a corner was cleared only as far as Jack Oberstellar and his deep cross was headed in by Ben Martin.

Oberstellar and Lee Clarke - who was named player-of-the-year before kick-off - were both denied and Jack Parkinson's 30-yard drive was turned aside.

Day had a free-kick expertly tipped over but the third goal finally arrived on the half-hour as Oberstellar's corner went straight in via the far post after Anthony Achempong managed to distract Locke.

Martin headed over another dangerous corner minutes later before Clarke was denied by a stunning one-handed save and then Pugh and Day also found Locke in fine form.

The second half did not provide the same excitement as Basingstoke improved, although they lacked any killer touch in front of goal.

Cumbers shot wide of the near post and Day shot wide before Jamie Coyle headed in his only goal of the campaign six minutes from time after another Oberstellar corner.

Welling ended the season on 75 points but the deduction of five points for financial irregularities proved crucial in the end.

Bromley's season finished with a disappointing 2-0 home defeat against Eastleigh.

Goals just before the break from Peter Adeniyi and Anthony Riviere sealed the three points for the Hampshire side.

Bromley finish the season in 11th.
