Woman gives birth at the side of the road in Gillingham

A woman gave birth by the side of a road in Gillingham.

Witnesses said the young woman went into labour just a five-minute drive from Medway Maritime Hospital on Wednesday morning.

A witness said: "I was walking past around 7.50am and saw the woman was giving birth next to Gillingham Park.

"She looked about 17 or 18 and there were a few people helping."

Another man added: "I knew something was happening and I thought she was giving birth, but I didn’t want to be nosey."

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a woman in labour in a car on Oxford Road, Gillingham.

"An ambulance was sent to the scene and the patient and her baby were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital."
