Woman hurt in kitchen blaze

A woman was treated for a slight burn after a fire tore through a house in Chatham earlier today.

It is believed between seven and eight people lived in the property, thought to have been rented, in Pagitt Street.

Fire crews from Medway fire station's Green Watch were called to the scene at around 1am.

Two pumps arrived at the house where residents were already waiting outside.

South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended and treated a woman who suffered a slight burn to her hand.

Fire fighters believe the incident, which caused about 30 per cent damage to the kitchen, was caused by a pan of cooking oil.

A spokesman added: "We would ask members of the public not to leave cooking oil pans unattended."

The crews were at the scene for about an hour.
