An elderly woman has died in a fire at a Gravesend town centre bungalow.

The victim, in her 80s, was found dead at the property in St James’s Avenue this morning.

Two fire crews from Thames-side station were called at about 9.15am, but the blaze – thought to have started in the kitchen – was out before they arrived.

A North Kent Police spokeswoman said the woman died at the scene. Her identity has not yet been confirmed.

Fire investigators spent the morning at the property probing the cause of the blaze, while the road was cordoned off at both ends by police.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Fire investigation teams are at the site to determine the cause of the fire, but it is not being treated as suspicious."
