Charlton Athletic 1 Bolton Wanderers 0

STRIKER Marcus Bent scored the only goal of the game as Charlton earned themselves a much-needed victory over Bolton in the Carling Cup third round at The Valley on Wednesday.

Bent won the match after just 17 minutes, getting on the end of strike partner Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's cross.

Defender Hermann Hreidarsson could have extended Charlton's lead before half-time, but Iain Dowie's side had to withstand an onslaught after the break to preserve their clean sheet.

The Addicks now face a tricky trip to Chesterfield, conquerers of West Ham, in the fourth round.

Charlton return to the bread and butter of the Premiership on Saturday when they travel to Newcastle United on Saturday. Kick-off is 5.15pm.

Charlton: Myhre, Young, Fortune, El Karkouri (Sankofa 82), Hreidarsson, Hughes, Holland, Kishishev (Rommedahl 88), Thomas (Ambrose 40), M Bent, Hasselbaink.
Subs not used: Andersen, John.
