Bolton 2 - Gillingham 0

Gillingham dreams of reaching the last 16 of the Carling Cup ended with a disappointing defeat in Tuesday's third round at Bolton's Reebok Stadium.

Goalkeeper Jason Brown's 23rd minute blunder turned the game the way of the Premier League side when he misjudged the bounce of the ball and allowed Stelios Giannakopoulos a simple goal.

Bolton, with one league victory to their credit in their last 10 games, took heart and went on to stress their Premier League superiority.

Danish international Henrik Pedersen sealed victory with a second in the 64th minute with a low angled drive.

Bolton would have won by more had Pedersen and Brazilian Jardel not missed sitters deep into stoppage time.
