NEW ROLE: John Keister will work as a player-coach

MARGATE fans have expressed their delight at the news that John Keister is staying at the club after being appointed player-coach.

The 34-year-old former Sierra Leone international has agreed a one year deal, and will work alongside manager Chris Kinnear and assistant boss Kevin Raine.

Keister who won 12 caps for his country, and played in the African Nations Cup joined Margate in March 2001. He made 124 league appearances for Walsall, Chester City and Shrewsbury Town.

Kinnear said: "John has a wealth of experience and I hope that he will pass that onto the younger members of the squad."

Keister won praise for his performances as sweeper, after switching from his usual midfield position last season, and is a real favourite with the supporters.

He left the pitch in tears at Havant last season, when Margate's second successive relegation was confirmed.

Meanwhile, defender Greg Oates has committed himself to the club by also agreeing a new one year stay.

The club have added another pre-season friendly to their list of warm-up games. They will visit Burgess Hill on Tuesday August 9, not Ashford as reported elsewhere.
