Cup misery as luck deserts Gate

Crawley 2 Margate 1

MARGATE went out of the GLS Cup at Broadfield Stadium on Tuesday night, but can count themselves very unlucky not to have progressed further in the competition.

They hit the woodwork four times in the first half, only to trail 2-0 at the interval, with Moses Jjunju on target in the second half of an entertaining game, watched by a crowd of nearly 500.

Jjunju (twice), Rocky Baptiste and a spectacular strike by Alexis Charalambous were all denied, as goalkeeper Andy Little, replacing former Margate favourite Phil Smith goal led a charmed life.

Dean Marney netted twice for the Sussex side, as Margate were forced into a half-time defensive reshuffle, with Greg Oates failing to reappear for the second half. Darren Watson replaced him, with top scorer Che Stadhart forced to play at right back, and letting nobody down.

Adrian Clarke was convinced he should have had won a second half penalty, but Margate bowed out, beaten but not disgraced.

Apart from Smith, Crawley also included ex-Margate pair Charlie McDonald and Sean Hankin in their line-up.
