YOUNG Kent golfer Michael Davenport, who has spent the last six years in America, is about to embark on a series of prestigious tournaments all held in Florida.

Davenport, who is 24 and enjoyed Christmas with his family at their Margate home, will be competing on the Gateway Tour which carries nearly three million dollars in prizemoney for the next seven months.

This former Dane Court GS pupil graduated in May from Nova South SE University in Florida where he was the first Brit to be awarded a major golf scholarship.

Now with a sport management degree under his belt and a golf professional since last July his long-term target is a US card.

With the likes of Phil Mickelson, Tom Lehman and Stewart Cink on the board of advisors of the Gateway Tour Davenport is fully aware of the big challenge that awaits him.

He said: “It’s a very hectic programme that just about covers every corner of Florida but I could not be better prepared than I am right now.”
